General Information
Academic advisors assist students as they become self-directed learners by teaching them to develop educational plans directed toward their academic, career, and personal aspirations.
Your academic advisor will help you:
• Choose a major
• Learn about degree programs and meet graduation requirements
• Select, add, and drop courses
• Understand NMSU policies, procedures, and deadlines
• Connect to resources that promote success in and out of the classroom.
Students can expect their advisor will:
1. Be available to listen to their concerns and questions and maintain confidentiality.
2. Correctly interpret degree and major requirements.
3. Provide accurate information about University regulations, policies, and procedures.
4. Provide guidance in their choice of classes and their career plan.
5. Be willing to listen to their concerns and to convey a sense of understanding.
6. Refer students to appropriate campus resources as necessary.
7. Assist students in monitoring their degree progress and in keeping academic records accurate.
Students are expected to:
• Know the degree requirements of the university, the college, and their major.
• Be familiar with the university academic regulations as listed in the Undergraduate Catalog and the Student Handbook.
• Consult with their advisors each semester about their degree and notify the Dean’s Office or Department of any discrepancy noted between records.
• Follow registration procedures.
• Be familiar with the Academic calendar for such information as drop-add deadlines, registration dates, and final exam schedule.
