Equipment Available For a list of the equipment available to you, refer to the equipment policy information provided to your class.
For additional audio equipment, we recommend contacting Sherwin Lau, (575) 646.6348 – kslau8@nmsu.edu.
- Equipment requests must be submitted on line. Visit http://cmi.nmsu.edu to find the form and turn in your request.
- If your class did not receive a list, you are not eligible to check out equipment.
- Students must inspect all equipment before leaving the Equipment Room. This means, at minimum, setting up the tripod, powering up the camera, testing all lights, and accounting for all accessories.
- Report damaged or missing parts to the attendant, who will replace your equipment or make a record of the problem. Any problems not noted at the time of checkout become the responsibility of the student.
- Equipment is assigned based on the date of request; first come, first served. The earlier you submit your request, the better we will be able to accommodate you.
- The equipment assigned to you or your group is for your use only. Do not loan borrowed equipment to other students or unaffiliated productions.
- Never drop off equipment without waiting for it to be checked back in. You will be held responsible for equipment checked out UNTIL the equipment manager has checked equipment back into the computer. Never leave equipment unattended. You will lose all equipment privileges if you do so.
- Students are NOT allowed to check out equipment for non-school shoots. If you get a project outside of class, use a rental house to get your equipment. (CMI is not associated with any of these equipment rental houses).

- You must pick up and drop off equipment on time and in good condition. If something holds you up, you must call in. If you don’t show up within 30 minutes of your equipment reservation it becomes available for other students. We have a limited amount of equipment and a great demand for it. Don’t be late!.
- You must get permission before you shoot! Shooting on location requires permits. If you do not have the proper permits you could be arrested (Film Las Cruces, City Permit), if you are shooting on campus, go to NMSU Campus Activities (Corbett Center) and contact the NMSU police department.
- You must be enrolled in a production course to have access to the production equipment. You must be enrolled in a post production course to have access to post equipment. Please see Sherwin Lau or Mitch Fowler, if you are in need of an exception.
- If you do not know how to use a piece of equipment, you will not be able to check it out. The person in-charge of the equipment room reserve the right to ask you to demonstrate your knowledge and can withhold equipment.
- All equipment is inventoried in the computer and has a barcode which is used to check it out to you; so if the computer says it is checked out to you it IS. Please verify what equipment has been checked out to you BEFORE you leave.
- Restrictions have been placed on the use of jib arms, lifts, as well as generators, please talk to your cinematography instructor or the equipment room manager.
- If you plan to use, the CMI Van, the trailer or haul any NMSU vehicle, please review the NMSU Motor Pool Policy. NMSU Driving Permit Required. Check-out the CMI Van.
100-200 Level Classes:
Assignments have specific kits or packages assigned to each class project by the instructor. No other equipment is available with these packages; do not ask for gear outside of these parameters. These reservations do not require the Faculty signature because every student of the class is expected.
Safety First
Each student is responsible for knowing how to safely and properly use the equipment they check out. The Equipment Room staff will help any student who needs additional instruction on the use of equipment. Do not be afraid to ask for help. There is no such thing as a silly question.
Report any theft immediately to NMSU Campus Police
(575.646.3311 – police@nmsu.edu) and CMI Equipment room (575.646.6145).
Failure to report thefts or loss to appropriate law enforcement authorities may result in the student being charged for full replacement costs.
