What should I bring to StoryCasting?
For the dorms, we require you bring:
- Twin-size extra-long sheets and bedding
- Towels
- An alarm clock
We recommend you bring:
- Sunscreen
- A bathing suit (if you plan to use the swimming pool during off-hours)
For working on set, we require you bring:
- Leather work gloves
- Comfortable closed-toe shoes
- A flashlight
- A pad and pens for note-taking
Can I bring a cell phone, laptop, iPod, or other personal electronic devices?
Yes you can, but NMSU and StoryCasting faculty and staff will not be responsible for lost or stolen items.
Also, you will be required leave these devices in your dorm rooms or turn them off during all camp workshops.
How much spending money will I need?
All food and housing costs are included, so you need little spending money. You will need your own money for vending machines, the campus convenience store, the Game Room, and the NMSU Bookstore.
How much free time will I have at this camp?
Because of the time-consuming nature of filmmaking, free time is limited to meals and minimal hours in the evening.
Can participants apply as a team (with a collaborative story)?
Although filmmaking is a collaborative medium and all StoryCasting participants will be put on teams to create four films, applications should be submitted on an individual basis.
What teaching approach will StoryCasting use?
Participants will be immersed in the film production process. The Creative Media Institute faculty will train the participants to use industry-standard digital filmmaking, sound design, and post-production equipment. Participants will use this training and equipment to produce their own short films.
How will participants be supervised during the day?
StoryCasting faculty will supervise all participants during workshops. Outside the workshops, participants will be supervised by counselors.
How will the participants be supervised in the dorms?
Because of the rigorous camp schedule, participants will have little time awake in dorms. Male and female counselors will be housed in the same hall as participants.
What happens to a participant who violates a camp rule?
Camp rules will be provided in the acceptance packet. A student who violates a camp rule will be immediately sent home at the expense of his or her parents.
Can my child bring a car?
We discourage cars because of parking issues and because participants will not be allowed to leave campus unsupervised. If a camper must drive him or herself to camp, we require that the keys be turned over to the camp director for the duration of the camp.
Will my child have access to public telephones?
Yes.
How can I contact my child in an emergency?
The sponsor and counselor’s cell phone numbers will be provided for parents' access at the orientation session on the first day of camp.
