Ryan Humble | ESPN | BCM/Digital Filmmaking ’11

Where are you and what are you doing now?

I am a Coordinating Media Operator at ESPN in Bristol, Connecticut. I do editing, highlight enhancement, replay for live games, event integration, jib, camera, and JitaCam (an upside down robotic jib mounted to the ceiling). Outside of ESPN I also became FAA certified for commercial drone use and started a drone photography and videography business.

What do you like most about what you’re doing?

I like that it is something new everyday. I work on such a variety of shows in so many different positions that it never gets old or repetitive.

What are some projects/jobs that you’ve worked on since graduating?

I have worked X Games, the NFL Draft, college football bowl games, Monday Night Countdown, and pretty much every studio show on ESPN.

What classes and learning experiences at CMI were the most valuable in building towards your current job?

I’ve found that my editing and cinematography classes were the most helpful for what I do now. Working for Aggie Vision was also very important.

What are you doing when you aren’t working?

I enjoy traveling, photography, skiing, kayaking, hiking, and spending time with my wife and son.

What advice would you give a CMI student (or maybe potential CMI student) about their time at CMI?

CMI students should make contacts, do internships, and explore all areas of filmmaking. You never know when one of those connections is going to be helpful. Also, find something that you enjoy in the media industry. I love what I do everyday here at ESPN and so it doesn’t feel like work. There hasn’t been a single day that I didn’t look forward to coming to work during my over 5 years here.

Where can people see your work?

My work can be seen daily on any of the ESPN networks and sometimes ABC. My drone footage can also be found on the Humble Sky Media YouTube and Instagram accounts.

Anything else you’d like to say?

I am very grateful for the experience and relationships I gained during my time at CMI.

Thank you, Ryan, for sharing your experiences and advice with us!
