Matt Wilson | Wilcher Productions | BCM/Digital Filmmaking ’11

Matt Wilson is a Commercial and Narrative Cinematographer based out of Albuquerque.

What do you like most about what you’re doing?

Watching a take unfold through the eye piece can be a really amazing experience. At the current level I work at I would say 8 to 9 times out of 10 you see a very average or plain performance, but every now and then you are backed up against a wall in the most uncomfortable position holding the camera still and the actor is delivering something pretty amazing. There is no better feeling than when you are watching that moment through the lens. It beats the hell out of a comfy theater seat any day.

What are some projects/jobs that you’ve worked on since graduating?

Odd Way Home (Feature Film), Wolff’s Law (Short Film), Dead River (Feature Film)

What classes and learning experiences at CMI were the most valuable in building towards your current job?

Honestly just about every class was extremely useful. You really need to know how every job works to be better at what you want to do on set.

What are you doing when you aren’t working?

Wishing I were on set.

What’s some advice you would give a CMI student (or maybe potential CMI student) about their time at CMI?

Just make stuff. It will be bad. Figure out why its bad. Make better stuff from the bad experiences.

Where can people see your work?

Anything else you’d like to say?

Always ask yourself “Why” when you are making a decision on set. If you know why a character moves from point A to point B and the answer isn’t “because it looks cool”, then you are way ahead of the other 90 percent out there making films.

Thank you, Matt, for sharing your experiences and advice!
