Internships
An academic experience unlike any you've seen.
At the Creative Media Institute (CMI), internships are a crucial part of the curriculum, especially for students pursuing careers in film, digital media, animation and other creative industries. Through internships, CMI students work with industry professionals, gaining practical skills that complement their classroom education. These opportunities help students prepare for careers in media production, post-production, animation, and more.
What is an internship?
An internship provides hands-on experience in a professional setting, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge, build skills, and network within their field. At CMI, internships offer students real-world opportunities to enhance their media expertise.

Internship FAQ's
We are currently working on creating a dedicated internship job board. In the meantime, we will share internship opportunities through the CMI Listserv and on the CMI Canvas Community Hub. You can also schedule a meeting with Kyle Ivy, the Internship Program Coordinator, to discuss your interests and find the right internship that aligns with your career goals.
To be eligible for internships, you must be accepted into the Creative Media Institute (CMI), maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5, and remain in good academic standing. These requirements ensure that students are prepared to gain valuable professional experience through their internships.
The internship is offered as an academic class to ensure a structured, guided educational experience. This allows us to vet mentors, track your progress, and provide detailed evaluations of your work. Additionally, having a dedicated Internship Coordinator ensures you receive support and check-ins throughout your internship, helping you get the most out of the opportunity and aligning it with your academic and career goals.
The FDMA 495 Course, also known as the CMI Internship course, is a variable credit course offering between 1 to 3 credits. The exact number of credits will be determined after a review by the CMI Internship Coordinator and CMI Department Head, based on your job duties, the scope of the internship, and the number of hours you will be working.
Internships offer several valuable benefits, including:
- Hands-On Experience: Gain real-world exposure in media production, post-production, animation, visual effects, and other aspects of the industry, allowing you to apply your classroom knowledge in practical settings.
- Professional Networking: Build industry contacts and relationships that can help you in your future career. Networking with professionals can lead to job opportunities and mentorship
- Portfolio Development: Develop a portfolio of work samples that showcase your skills and experiences in film, animation, and visual effects, which will be essential for future job applications.
- Career Preparation: Internships often serve as a stepping stone to job offers or provide clarity on your career direction, helping you to better understand what roles and environments suit you best.
